Re-Figure
- June 20–July 26, 2008
- For centuries, whether through self or subject; portraiture has served as a way to become more deeply acquainted with the human visage. More recently, artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Frieda Kahlo explored the possibility of conveying the essence of one’s being beyond the traditional physical sense. Elise Engler and Barbara Zucker, both contemporary portraitists, characterize without reference to physical likeness. By assembling distinct parts, these artists create layered, conceptual views of their subjects. Engler and Zucker began these portraits to learn more about themselves and to portray the world as they live in it. It is through Re-Figure that we begin to re-examine the way in which we see ourselves and the world in which we live.
