March 9–April 14, 2007
James Johnson and Christine Shank
“Inside/Insight” explores contemporary (re)visions of interior scenes. Johnson and Shank approach photography through innovative processes combining installation, sculpture, and lighting. Meditations on interior spaces, their works illustrate a mastery of mis-en-scene, a film term describing the representation of space to create a quality or feel. In Johnson’s multipart photomontages, the viewer peers into dynamic scenes, oscillating over the picture plane and revealing foreign but familiar lives. Cross-sections of humanity, Johnson’s installations illuminate our genius and imperfection. Shank builds her scenes in miniature to create arresting images that suggest unfolding narratives. Her photographs are fantastic and quotidian at once. Philadelphia-based Johnson and Saint Louis-based Shank illustrate the capacity of walls and objects to rekindle memories and convey moods through their masterful photographs. This exhibition is made possible with generous support by Stephen & Burns.
