Past and Presences: Work by Catherine Hall

Past and Presences: Work by Catherine Hall

Sunday, December 31, 2006–Saturday, January 27, 2007
2006 Barbara Smail Award Recipient Exhibition
When Catherine Hall began her study of art history at Manchester University, after pursuing a fine arts degree, her esteemed professor John White warned her that once she studied art history, she would stop making art because she’d realize that she could never equal the past. Instead, Hall, an active professor in both disciplines, has woven her study of art history into her studio practice. Art history feeds her creativity; her artistic practice sustains her investigations of prior artists and cultures. In “Pasts and Presences,” Hall leads the viewer through art’s nuanced history using her contemporary artworks, for which she derived inspiration from the past. From Pompeii to Matisse, Hall brings fresh and resolved (re)visions to art history.
