What is JAZZLAB?

JAZZLAB seeks to harness the creative energy abundant downtown during the festival and give it the space it needs to evolve into a multi-dynamic piece of art itself. The Lab serves as a meeting place for artists, media and community members alike to define this kenetic body of work.

 

FEATURING:

VISIONARY/MUSIC: ARTHUR BROOKS

This collaboration features a contemporary new work under the direction of free jazz innovator and NEA grant recipient, Arthur Brooks, an instigator in the regional free jazz scene, and avant-garde improviser and disciple of Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor. Brooks has toured Europe extensively with his group Ensemble V – created though teaching improvisational jazz classes at Bennington College. The group now features local luminaries, Michael Chorney on prepared guitar; Anthony Santor on upright bass; Strength in Numbers’ percussionist, P.J. Davidian, and cellists Polly Vanderputten and Nelson Caldwell. Ensemble V currently performs on Wednesdays at The Radio Bean in Burlington.

On Thursday, June 11, Ensemble V is joined by Dutch Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher at 3pm in The Lab, The trio headllines the FlynnSpace later that evening.

 

DANCE: THE ARCHITECTS

Brooks also enlists the collaborative skills of Chicago-based dance quartet, The Architects. While established choreographers in their own right, these dancers come together in the spirit of improvisation to create unique performances each day during JAZZLAB.

 

ART: SUE REES + CLARK DERBES

Sculptor and set designer Sue Rees brings her improvisational design approach to the look of this year’s JAZZLAB. One can expect her action-inspired work to incorporate live audio visual elements and that will enlist the assistance of anyone entering the JAZZLAB for a living and breathing installation that will develop as the lab evolves.

Artist Clark Derbes will also be on hand each day during JAZZLAB, discussing his participatory work in the Firehouse Gallery, part of the exhibition Uncharted Territories.

 

INTERACT: THE RADIATOR + THE LABBLOG

The Radiator, 105.9 fm WOMM-LP will serve as the voice of the people, broadcasting live outside the Firehouse, seeking public expression and impression.

 

Visitors to JAZZLAB will also be asked to participate by interacting with the LABBLOG, a blogging station where the public can upload photos from Jazz Week or simply comment on what they have seen during the festival.

 

Stop by the Firehouse Gallery during the Festival and pick up a JAZZLAB syllabus. Performance are free and open to the public Thursday, June 11–Saturday, June 13 from 3–8pm on the Second Floor of the Firehouse Center. Beer and Wine will be served from 5pm to 8pm each evening.
