Matting and Framing Workshop

Saturday, February 17, 12–4pm
Come learn how to use the professional Logan mat cutter at the Firehouse and save money on your next framing project! In this workshop students, will learn the basic elements of matting and framing a 2-dimensional image in any medium. Topics such as archival materials, appropriate sizing, mat colors, frame choices and hardware, backing materials and glazing will be covered. Students will also learn how to use the Logan mat cutter in the Firehouse Community Darkroom workspace for future framing endeavors. Please come to the workshop with an image 5” x 7” or smaller to use for practice. (CLASS CODE: 811224–1)

Quick No-Glue Books

Saturday, March 10, 10am–4pm
This one-day exploration of no-glue books will start with a morning devoted to creating paste papers rich with color and texture. These beautiful papers will then be used to create numerous book structures with simple sewn bindings. Students will be encouraged to experiment with both traditional and nontraditional structures. By the end of the workshop, students will take home their own unique books with plenty of blank pages ready to be filled! (CLASS CODE: 811332–1)

Bookmaking: The Basics

Saturday, April 14, 10am–4pm
This one-day exploration of adhesive book structures will start with a morning devoted to creating rich textured papers using fun and easy techniques such as bubble prints. Students will be encouraged to use their textured papers as cover pages and will learn how to create a variety of hard board covered book models including concertina structures, simple straight accordions, flag books and round books. By the end of the workshop, students will take home their own unique books with plenty of blank pages ready to be filled! (CLASS CODE: 811333–1)

Photocopy Transfer Methods

Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6, 10am–4pm
In this workshop participants will learn photocopy transfer methods to create unique prints using copies of their own images or found images. Images can be used alone or combined with traditional methods as an adjunct to enhance a print or to transfer images onto zinc or copper plates as an acid resist. The instructor will bring examples of the use of photographic images in contemporary art for discussion. The secondary emphasis in this workshop will be on the content and development of images within one’s work. (CLASS CODE: 811331–1)

Book Arts Guild

First Wednesday of each month, 6:30–8:30pm
The Book Arts Guild, organized in January 2005, seeks to encourage and educate its members and the public through workshops, exhibits, fieldtrips and guest speakers. Membership is open to book artists, teachers, students, librarians, printmakers, photographers, papermakers, conservators, calligraphers, collectors and ‘paper queens,’ i.e. anyone with enthusiasm for the spectrum of disciplines and skills in the book arts field.
