Adobe Illustrator

Learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator, a creative computer program used to create interesting graphics, clipart and more! Learn how to layout and design posters and other single page documents. This class will give you the basics and help you become proficient at using this powerful layout program. Students will explore a variety of software techniques and will create projects suited to their own interests. He has taught photography at the Green Mountain Conservation Camp and enjoys building his own cameras. Drawing
- Mondays, September 27- November 8 (no class 10/11), 6:30-8:30pm

Learn a variety of drawing techniques including basic perspective, compositional layout and use of dramatic light and shadow. Students will work mostly from observation and will be encouraged to work with a variety of media including pencil, pen and ink, ink wash, charcoal, conte crayon and colored pencil. - Instructor: Glynnis Fawkes
Graduated with an MFA in painting from Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999 and has a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. A Fulbright grant to Cyprus resulted in two published books, one of paintings and one of cartoons, both about the archeology of the island. She has exhibited her work in Boston, Nicosia, Portland, Oregon, and Wollongong, Australia. She has worked as an illustrator on many archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean and has taught drawing in Boston, Australia, Lebanon and at UVM.

Contemporary Figure Painting

For intermediate and advanced painters, this class explores the vitality of non-traditional figure painting, with emphasis on fresh color, dynamic composition and personal expression. Participants use water-soluble oils and work from clothed and nude models each week. Small class size allows for plenty of individual feedback, demonstrations and informal critiques in a supportive environment. Figure drawing experience helpful. Materials list will be provided. Gail Salzman exhibits her paintings throughout the East Coast. Recent shows include New Turf at the UVM Fleming Museum, 2006. Gail is the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the NEA, Vermont Arts Council, and Vermont Arts Endowment Fund. Children’s Book Illustration

Learn the ABC’s of children’s book illustration! Students will draw and develop techniques using art materials appropriate for different stories: pencil, charcoal, pen and ink and watercolors. Drawing subjects will focus on children, animals, interior and exterior environments and still life details. Learn how to integrate words and pictures so that they advance the overall narrative, rather than compete with each other. Lectures will include the history of great children’s book illustrators and the role they played in turning good stories into classics. Materials list will be provided. (CLASS CODE: 841126-1)

Marc Nadel is a children’s book and magazine illustrator whose work has been published by Highlights for Children, Harcourt, Random House, Boyds Mills Press, and Children’s Television Workshop, among others. He has won several illustration awards, including The Distinguished Achievement Award from The Educational Press Association for the long running Top Secret Adventures series. His latest book is Another Jar of Tiny Stars from Boyds Mills Press.

Fashion Illustration

Learn the basics of fashion illustration! Students will draw and paint using gouache, watercolor and more and will be encouraged to render fabrics, illustrate their own designs, and experiment with a variety of fashion drawing styles as they create a portfolio. Drawing and Painting

Begin with the basics of drawing and transition to painting with water-soluble oils. Students will learn many drawing and painting techniques and will learn how to apply composition, linear aspects, form and color theory to their work. Abstract Painting

Students will be guided to explore the many exciting possibilities of abstract painting. Using the paint of their choice (water-soluble oils, acrylics or watercolor), students will be encouraged to experiment and try adding other mixed media as well. Students will learn from each other and will discuss techniques and ideas in supportive critique. Students should bring in some ideas or some reference material to use as a starting place. Precious Metal Clay

Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a composite of 90% fine silver and 10% water and organic binder. It can be shaped just like any other kind of clay and when fired burns out the binder leaving a solid silver piece. In this class, a variety of techniques will be demonstrated showing the versatility of the material. Students will be able to create several pieces. (CLASS CODE: 841524-1)

Our classes and workshops offer an array of clay and craft experiences in such mediums as hand building, wheel throwing, sculpture, silversmithing, fiber arts and more. Our large, sunny studio has three classrooms, 14 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder and a wide variety of hand tools to enhance your project design. There are also more than 100 glaze combinations available to complete your ceramic work. We offer extensive open studio hours for those who choose to pursue clay through our many classes. Our studio use is also available for monthly rental for those that wish to explore their art at their leisure. Children’s classes and family activities are available year round.

Monthly studio rentals offer more than 20 hours of studio use during weekdays, evenings and weekends, and includes glazes and kiln firings. Clay sold separately for $20/25lb bag.
