Visual Arts Classes for Adults
Drawing Basics
- Mondays, February 1- March 22 (no class 2/15, 3/8), 6:30-8:30pm

Learn a variety of drawing techniques including basic perspective, compositional layout and use of dramatic light and shadow. Students will work mostly from observation and will be encouraged to work with a variety of media including pencil, pen and ink, ink wash, charcoal, conte crayon and colored pencil. Graduated with an MFA in painting from Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999 and has a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. A Fulbright grant to Cyprus resulted in two published books, one of paintings and one of cartoons, both about the archeology of the island. She has exhibited her work in Boston, Nicosia, Portland, Oregon, and Wollongong, Australia. She has worked as an illustrator on many archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean and has taught drawing in Boston, Australia, Lebanon and at UVM.

Beginning Jewelry
- Tuesdays, February 9-March 16, 6-8:30pm
- Limit: 12
Learn how to use jewelry hand tools to make original finished pieces of jewelry. Students will learn many techniques including sawing, forming, soldering and more. There will be two loosely based assignments adapted to each student’s ideas. Material fees are not included and will vary based on the type and amount of metals used.

Our classes and workshops offer an array of clay and craft experiences in such mediums as hand building, wheel throwing, sculpture, silversmithing, fiber arts and more. Our large, sunny studio has three classrooms, 14 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder and a wide variety of hand tools to enhance your project design. There are also more than 100 glaze combinations available to complete your ceramic work. We offer extensive open studio hours for those who choose to pursue clay through our many classes. Our studio use is also available for monthly rental for those that wish to explore their art at their leisure. Children’s classes and family activities are available year round.

Monthly studio rentals offer more than 20 hours of studio use during weekdays, evenings and weekends, and includes glazes and kiln firings. Clay sold separately for $20/25lb bag.

Portrait and Figure Painting

For intermediate and advanced painters, this class explores the vitality of non-traditional figure and portrait painting, with emphasis on fresh color, dynamic composition and personal expression. Participants use water-soluble oils and work from clothed and nude models each week. Large mirrors for self-portraits will also be available. The small class size allows for plenty of individual feedback, demonstrations and informal critiques in a supportive environment. Figure and portrait drawing experience needed. Gail Salzman exhibits her paintings throughout the East Coast. Recent shows include New Turf at the UVM Fleming Museum, 2006. Gail is the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the NEA, Vermont Arts Council, and Vermont Arts Endowment Fund. Drawing and Painting

Abstract Painting

Students will be guided to explore the many exciting possibilities of abstract painting. Using the paint of their choice (water-soluble oils, acrylics or watercolor), students will be encouraged to experiment and try adding other mixed media as well. Students will learn from each other and will discuss techniques and ideas in supportive critique. Students should bring in some ideas or some reference material to use as a starting place. Adobe In-Design

Learn the basics of Adobe In-Design, a creative computer program used for magazine and book layout, for designing text and for preparing digital and print publications. This class will give you the basics on which you can then develop further skills and become proficient at using this powerful layout program. Students will explore a variety of software techniques and will create projects suited to their own interests. Enameling
- Tuesdays, April 6-May 11, 6-8:30pm
- Limit: 5
This class is for students that have some prior metalsmithing experience. Enameling is a very old process used to adhere thin layers of glass to metal. Students will learn different enameling techniques on copper and silver using a small jewelry kiln. see mapDescription: Located at 250 Main Street in Memorial Auditorium, the Print Studio offers seasonal classes in printmaking and book arts ranging from introductory courses to master workshops, all taught by experienced artists. The spacious studio includes a 30 x 48” Takach etching press, a Vandercook SP15 proofing press, large work tables, ample storage space, inks, solvents, and a variety of materials available on site. Studio 250 is equipped for relief and intaglio printmaking (including etching), as well as letterpress and monotype, and offers extensive open studio hours at affordable rates for seasoned printmakers as well as beginning students.

Watercolor

Learn how to paint with watercolor. This class will focus on observational painting from still life, figure, landscape and photos. Students will paint on watercolor paper stretched on board or watercolor blocks and will gain experience with composition, color theory, layering, light and shade.
